Nearly thirty years ago, after failing to be a faithful wife, I hit the road, looking for love. I suppose I was hoping to find people who knew how to keep not just love, but also lust, alive. What was wrong with me? Why wasn't I a one-man woman? I needed to find out. That is how this project really began, and like a lover it has enveloped me over many years- evolving, shaping me as I shaped it. I have learned a huge amount during the course of it, about myself, about the many ways people can love one another. About how crucial it is to follow your instincts, to keep passion alive and vital in your life. Some of the people who appear in these photographs engage in sex with multiple partners; a number of them have highly charged sexual personas. Others follow a more traditional path in terms of their relationships. The underlying element that unifies all these people is the conviction that love is truth, and truth is love.
"Love & Lust" was published as a monograph by Aperture in 2004, edited by Melissa Harris.
